A Hip Tip...

Noise Colored Party

Ric Ocasek

March 6–April 25, 2008

Invitation Only Reception: March 6th
Gallery Hop: March 7th, 6–10pm

Ric Ocasek, renowned lead singer and songwriter from The Cars, will debut his first solo art exhibition, Noise Colored Party, at the Mahan Gallery, March 6, 2009. The two-month exhibition will showcase select works from the 1980s to the present across several media: drawings with pen, colored pencils and markers, digital photo collages and mixed media paintings.

For Ocasek, who has also found success as a music producer for No Doubt, Nada Surf, Weezer and other groups, the boundary between the musical and the visual is nebulous. Like music, his artwork encompasses elements of rhythm, harmony and dynamics. He creates art as an escape, each piece emerging as a transient daydream or diversion as he works in his studio, passes time on airplanes or simply sits in a quiet spot. Self-described as colorful, abstract and unconscious, the artwork is an extension of himself a collection of self-portraits created without pretense and with no intent for public exhibition. Visitors to the gallery are free to interpret and experience the artwork in their own way.

It is fitting that Ocasek's first art exhibition takes place in Columbus, the city where he spent many of his formative years as well as where he met fellow Cars bandmember, the late Benjamin Orr.

Ocasek will make an appearance at the gallery for an invitation-only reception on Friday, March 6, with a possible public appearance during Gallery Hop.

Please join us for the Gallery Hop: Saturday, March 7th from 6–10pm

The Mahan Gallery presents the work of contemporary artists in a variety of media, including painting, photography, and sculpture. Gallery hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 11am–6pm and by appointment.

Sometimes simple is better...

I saw this secret on Post Secret this past week and just loved it...it really sums up this whole "love" thing up, don't you think?!

Hope you had a nice Valentine's Day...
I'll post soon about mine (it was awesome!)

Please watch this video...

Have you heard that Ken Starr -- and the Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund -- filed legal briefs defending the constitutionality of Prop 8 and attempting to forcibly divorce 18,000 same-sex couples that were married in California last year? The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in this case on March 5, with a decision expected within 90 days.

The Courage Campaign has created a video called "Fidelity," with the permission of musician Regina Spektor, that puts a face to those 18,000 couples and all loving, committed couples seeking full equality under the law.

Please watch this heartbreaking video now. If you have the same reaction that I did, please help me spread the word by sharing it with your friends and family ASAP:

http://www.couragecampaign.org/Divorce

The more people who see this video, the more people will understand the pain caused by Prop 8 and Ken Starr's shameful legal proceeding.

After you watch the video, please join me and over 200,000 people who have signed a letter to the state Supreme Court, asking them to invalidate Prop 8 and reject Starr's case.

Thanks.

Working Girl...

Okay...I know it has been weeks since my last post. Don't worry - I'm still here.

I haven't been able to get online much in the past week because I started a new job at Smiths Medical in Dublin on the 10th. I finally broke down and got hired on as a temp...within 5 days I had my new position! It was originally just an 8 week assignment, but on my first day the manager pulled me out of the group and now I'm temp-to-hire.

I do data entry (entering PO's from all over the country) in my own little cubicle - and I am treated like a regular employee. So far I like it - it is challenging because each order is unique and I have to remember a lot. I love that I don't have to take calls. I'm also allowed to listen to my music on my MP3 player whenever I want. The people are friendly too. Plus, the perks so far have included this awesome birthday cake and next week I get a free massage at work! Sweet...

I'm working full time now and it is kicking my ass. It has been years since I have done this and my old body is not used to it. I seem to be fine at work (after I get over the shock of being awake at 6:45 AM), but as soon as I get home all I want to do is sleep. I'm useless. I haven't even been getting online to check my emails or anything. I'm seriously out of the loop. I'm so behind on my SpeakOUT work. I don't know how I used to handle everything before.

My poor dog does not seem to understand why I keep leaving for so long. Poor sweetie.

Anyhow...I know this is short, but I need to get to bed. I promised myself I would write though.

Mission accomplished!

(P.S. The photo reminds me of how I feel right now. Some hackers changed this traffic sign in Austin, TX. F-hillarious!)

Than never....

And here's Daisy all ready for trick or treat!

She got the most attention the entire night.

In case you can't tell what she is - she's dressed up as a hot dog. Get it?! :o)

Better late...

Remember waaaaay back in November when I told you I'd post some photos of the kid's costumes for Halloween? Well, I finally got off my arse and scanned them.

Voila!
